History of Cabo San Lucas / San Jose Del Cabo / Los Cabos

More on Cabo San Lucas & San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas, where the sea, sun and desert join to cast an air of mystery and romance over all who visit. Cabo was once a tranquil fishing village and, in times long ago, a hangout for pirates. Although no longer the fishing village of old, and not many of the old pirates are seen around town any more, the magic of Cabo remains. Cabo is still small and charming by any standards, with a population of under 30,000. We do have 4 stop lights now. And with the number of activities available to the visitor, you could easily imagine you are in a giant amusement park.

Cabo has come of age. Located at the southernmost tip of the magnificent Baja peninsula, Cabo has been blessed with what many describe as the perfect climate. Average year-round temperature is 78 degrees, it is a little cooler in the winter and a bit warmer in the summer. For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private yacht owners. They flocked here to be near "Marlin Alley", as the waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved, as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world.

But Cabo is far from remote these days, and the attraction of this magical spot is no longer limited to marlin fishing. Cabo can be, many different things to people. Cabo San Lucas has become known as a perfect vacation spot for the entire family.  Cabo can be as quiet, romantic and relaxing as any secret hideaway.  It can also be as lively as anyone can possibly imagine. If your wish is to enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner, "muy romantico", beside the shimmering sea for just the two of you, we have some of the most romantic dining spots on the face of the earth.  If golf, water sports, boating, fishing, ATV's, horseback riding and numerous other activities are what you seek, they're all  here, waiting for you.  If "party till you drop" is the mood of the evening, Cabo has got it for you, big time!

Beaches !
From the main beach at Playa Medano, one of the great people watching spots in the world, to quiet Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) a short boat ride away.  There are the countless quiet coves, where you'll most likely find no other footprints in the sand.  Miles and miles of deserted beaches, on both the Pacific coast and the shoreline of the Sea of Cortez, make for an unbelievable vacation area; the kind beach lovers dream of.  Snorkeling at either of the beautiful bays of Santa Maria or Chileno seems to be the very reason snorkeling was invented.

 Sports & Things to do

Sport Fishing

The sport fishing is unparalleled in the world. Marlin of the blue, black and striped variety. Sailfish, dorado (also known as mahi mahi or dolphin fish), tuna, wahoo, roosterfish and endless varieties of bottom fish and surf fish. Cabo is, by far, the world's very best all around location for sport fishing. Even if you are not a fisherman, you should try your hand at  fishing while visiting Cabo. Landing your very first marlin is an experience that you will treasure for a lifetime.    PLEASE RELEASE ALL BILLFISH !!   Cabo is the host city every year to the world's richest series of marlin tournaments in October,  see Tournament  Time, below.   Fly-fishing is beginning to catch on in a very big way in Cabo.  The local "PANGAS" are another alternative that is a relatively inexpensive way to catch your trophy fish and have a lot of fun on the water.  This area is blessed with the worlds most abundant fishing grounds.  Surf fishing also can be very productive here and is great fun for the whole family.  Pack a lunch and have a picnic on the beach while fishing.  The local "PANGAS" are another alternative that is a relatively inexpensive way to catch your trophy fish and have a lot of fun on the water.  Surf fishing also can be very productive here and is great fun for the whole family.  Pack a lunch and have a picnic on the beach while fishing.

New world record dorado caught in Cabo.  On July 31, 2001 Jim Dillon fishing aboard the local charter boat "El Budster" caught what has finally been approved by the IGFA as a world record for 80lb test line for Dolphinfish.  These fish are better known locally as dorado and also known as mahi mahi.  The 85 lb bull dorado is also the largest dorado ever recorded in Mexican waters.  Congratulations Jim.

Water Sports

Swimming, scuba diving, surfing, para-sailing, snorkeling, sea kayaking, water skiing,   glass bottom  boat cruises, wave runners, wind surfing, whale watching, you name it and it is available here. Scuba divers will not soon forget their dive at the world famous sand falls, located just past the even more famous natural rock arch at Land's End.   Don't miss one of the Pez Gato snorkeling trips to the incredible Santa Maria bay or one of their great Sunset or Booze Cruises.   Some newer attractions in Cabo, are attracting a lot of notice.  Cabo Expeditions and their fleet of Zodiacs are offering up some really exciting snorkeling and ecological adventure tours.

Out Of The Water

You can't spend your entire vacation on or in the water. Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding area offers many interesting side trips and non-water related activities! The Glass Factory, just outside of town offers you the opportunity to observe the ancient art of glass blowing. These talented artists create incredible glass works, by hand, from balls of molten glass while you are not more than 10 feet away. You can visit this incredible site free of charge, mornings are best. They also sell what they create on site.  For those who have rented a car you may want to take the beautiful one hour drive along the Pacific coast to Todos Santos, a small town and artists colony that is also home to a couple of great restaurants. There are many beautiful deserted beaches along the way, try a picnic, do some surf fishing or have a siesta.  A drive up our other coast road, in the opposite direction,  toward the East Cape areas of Buena Vista and Los Barriles, is strictly for the more adventurous among you.  The road is unpaved (it is usually passable) and not very well kept, but the endless beaches and coves make for an incredible adventure of discovery.  Take your snorkeling gear and surf casting outfit and, see if you can catch lunch.  For the less adventuresome, perhaps a short walk down to the local sport fishing dock. Do this around 2 PM and watch the daily catch come in, you'll hear some amazing fish stories. You never know, they just might hang a world record fish while you are there.

Golfing in Cabo

golf cabo, coral baja 1,2 & 3 bedroom rentals

Los Cabos is home to six world class championship golf courses, with more on the way.  Three of these were designed by Jack Nicklaus, one by Robert Trent Jones II and one by Pete Dye. Cabo del Sol actually boasts of two championship courses.  The ocean course at Cabo del Sol is a Nicklaus creation which skirts the shore of the Sea of Cortez and has been called one of the five most beautiful courses in the world. The second course at Cabo del Sol is the stunning desert course which was designed by Tom Weiskopf.  San Jose del Cabo is the home of a delightful nine hole public course.  Golf has quickly become a major attraction here.  Where else can you catch a marlin in the morning, play eighteen holes and still be home by early afternoon?

Horseback Riding

The area offers some great places to ride. Ride along the beach at sunset, go a little farther, up into the hills and view Cabo from an angle most people never get to see. Take your camera! Tours can be arranged for any number of riders. There are also  jumping and dressage arenas for advanced riders.

ATV Tours & Rentals

The surrounding desert offers unlimited riding possibilities. The desert and nearby mountains combine to offer great rides within a short distance of town. Organized tours are offered to El Faro Viejo, the old lighthouse on the Pacific, with it's great sand dunes. Another great tour is the half day trip up to the mountain village of Candelaria, where it is rumored that some of the locals still practice witchcraft. You can also rent motorcycles and scooters.

Restaurants
Quality restaurants abound, all types and all sizes, from small taco stands to tables in the sand on Medano Beach, to elegant cliff side dining. Cabo is a food lover's paradise. Fresh seafood is, of course, a specialty of the area. But, don't be surprised if you have the world's greatest Caesar Salad while you are here. The choices are endless. There is one cliff side restaurant (famous locally for viewing our great sunsets) where you can swim in one of the four pools, while waiting for your meal or just enjoying cocktails.

Night Life

If you are one of those who turn into an animal at night, you will feel right at home in Cabo. With nightclubs like El Squid Roe, Hard Rock Cafe, Cabo Wabo and the Giggling Marlin, Cabo is hard to beat for great nightlife.  Be glad you remembered earlier that you were in the land of siestas (see below), because it can very easily turn out that you will be dancing until dawn.

Shopping

Cabo has an abundance of shops selling all types of Mexican handicrafts, silver, and all kinds of beautiful ceramics. The beauty of our new mega mall, Puerto Paraiso, is sure to impress any visitor.  The mall has already changed the shopping scene in here in Cabo.  As more shops open in Puerto Paraiso the mall get more popular, as a place to shop and dine.  Shop anywhere in town for tee shirts with some of the most outrageous designs available anywhere, wood carvings, Cuban cigars, unique objects made of pewter, pure vanilla and designer sportswear at duty free prices.  Prescription drugs are often 40% to 60% less expensive here than in the U.S. People have been known to spend an entire vacation just cruising the shops in Cabo.

Siestas

This is the land of siestas, do not abuse your stay here by not participating in this national pastime. Siestas seem to come naturally in Cabo.  Some say it's the climate, some say it's the clean air, maybe you just over fished or stayed out a minute, or so, too late last night.  Whatever the reason, siestas are one of México's greatest contributions to the world.  Many tourists state that while visiting Cabo San Lucas they are overcome by the overwhelming urge to partake in the pleasure of a siesta!  Don't fight it, go with the flow. Enjoy your stay, and don't offend the locals; HAVE A SIESTA!

Tournament Time-Big Time!!

October, November and December in Cabo mean serious fishing time. Fishing for money and fishing for charity. The world's richest billfish tournament, Bisbee's Black and Blue, is Cabo's most famous event. Cabo's scenic outer harbor and the world famous arch at Land's End create a setting for the start of the Bisbee's that is nothing short of spectacular. Over One hundred fifty boats starting at the same time and racing for the best fishing spot. WHAT A SIGHT! Millions in prize money can really get the competitive blood boiling.

American dollars are widely accepted here, as are travelers checks.  Major credit cards are also accepted in many locations, in restaurants, ask before ordering.  The banks all have cash machines that will dispense money by way of your credit card.

Frequently asked questions and answers

Will I be able to use my credit cards?  Can I get cash from the banks with my credit cards?

Answer:  Yes, to both questions. All major credit cards (except Discover) are widely accepted. In restaurants, it is best to ask before ordering, not every business accepts credit cards, just as back home. All of the banks will give cash advances, most have ATM machines at their locations, for after hours cash.

What is the legal drinking age in México, and what time do the night clubs close?

Answer:  The legal drinking age is 18.  There is no set closing time, many of the night clubs stay open until the wee hours of the morning 3 or 4 am.

Will my hair dryer, portable iron, electric toothbrush, work in México?

Answer:  Yes, if you are from the U.S. or Canada.  México uses the same voltage as the United States.  If you are coming from Europe, or any country that uses 220 volts, you will need the proper adapters.

Will my cellular phone work in Mexico?

Answer: We have local cellular service.  Some cellular services will allow you to roam in Mexico. Most cell phones will work, but they must be reprogrammed by the local service provider Baja Celular or Telcel.  Remember to have it reprogrammed again before returning to the U.S.

How can I access the Internet to receive my e-mail?

Answer:  There is an Internet Cafe, Cafe On Line, just one block from Plaza Las Glorias. Located on Cabo San Lucas Avenue in the downtown area.  They are open from 9 AM until 8 PM daily (closed Sunday), you can call them at 143-7283 for better directions.

Can I use my laptop computer to get my e-mail?

Answer:  You can bring your laptop computer, you will have to contact the one local ISP CABOTEL that will provide you with temporary Internet access for your limited stay.  If you are staying in a hotel, make sure your modem will bypass their PBX phone system.  If your modem will not, there is hardware and software available that will handle that part of the problem for you.  If you travel a lot and stay in hotels, this is something you should definitely have.

Can I buy Cuban cigars?   Can I take them back with me?

Answer: Yes you can buy them, and yes, they are expensive. No, you cannot take them back to the U.S., but if you are returning to Canada it is OK.  Be careful of counterfeits.

Can I drink the water?

Answer: In the hotels and most restaurants, you will get purified water. I would not drink the water from a private home or condo, unless you know there is a purification system installed. The water here is very pure, but the distribution system is not so perfect.  Buy bottled water.  Why not be completely safe!

Can we get married in Cabo?

Answer:  Most definitely, many people do.  It will be almost impossible unless you hire someone who, speaks the language, understands the legal requirements and procedures.

Is it safe to walk around the town at night?

Answer:  Yes definitely, I feel much safer here than I do in the United States. There is very little crime here, and what little there is, is usually very petty compared to the U.S.  Use your common sense, and be careful.

Can you tell me what the taxi rates are?

Answer: No, I can’t, as they vary from taxi to taxi.   It is best to check with the desk at your hotel. They should be able to tell you what the fare should be.  Then check again with the taxi driver.  Do this before you get into the taxi!  Don’t be afraid to bargain for a cheaper fare, especially if there are several in your party.

What about the public bus system?  There are public busses that run between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo all day, every day of the week.  They start running in San Jose at 5:00 AM and in Cabo they start at 5:20 AM, and run until 9:30 or 10:00 PM.  There are official bus stops, with seats and shade, but the busses can be flagged down, from almost anywhere along the highway, by waving your arms.  They will usually stop, if they see you in time and you wave so they can see you.

The busses only run on the main highway and pass each stop approx every twenty minutes.  The fare is 16 pesos (about $1.45 U.S.) between the two towns, less if your only going part of the way.  There are also express busses that won't stop for you (they must be boarded at a bus station), but wave anyway, they all look alike around here.

How will I know if I am getting a good deal on merchandise?

Answer:  This is one question that nobody but you can answer. A good rule of thumb is, with street or beach vendors, always get at least a 30% discount, sometimes more. In most stores the prices are fixed, just as they are at home.  If you are making large purchases or if there are several people in your party that are buying something, you can always ask for a discount.  If you’re happy with the price of something, then you are getting a good deal.

What about hospitals and doctors?

Answer: We have a nice new hospital, and we have some competent doctors. Many speak English.  The equipment here is usually older and somewhat out of date, compared to what you are probably used to. The hospital is not equipped for severe trauma cases. Check with your hotel for the name of an English-speaking doctor, write their phone numbers down and carry them with you.  Always check with your doctor if there is any doubt in your mind.  Medical service here is nowhere near as sophisticated as in the U.S. or Canada.

Are the beaches safe?

Answer:  Generally, yes.  There are a few places to beware of.  The beaches on the Pacific side can be very dangerous, especially in the summer, be very careful.  The main beach, Medano Beach and Lover's Beach (bay side only, beware on the Pacific side) are probably the safest places to swim.  The bays of Chileno and Santa Maria are usually safe, but be careful if there are any swells (usually summer).  Remember, there are no lifeguards here.   During the summer there can be large swells, even on the Sea of Cortez.  Be careful and buddy up, swim with a friend, always!  Tell other people  where you are going to swim and your expected return time.

What about going topless or totally nude on the beaches?

Answer:  Both are illegal in México.  Use your common sense, look around, see what others are doing, if there are others that are topless nearby, the chances are pretty good that it is, most likely, locally accepted.

History of Cabo San Lucas / San Jose Del Cabo / Los Cabos

Resting at the tip of the Baja Peninsula are the sparkling resorts of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, known as "the capes," or Los Cabos (los-KAH-bows) in Spanish.

Once used as a frequent provision stop for pirates awaiting passage of the Manila Galleons, today Los Cabos is headed for resort stardom. In the last fifteen years, it has evolved from a sleepy hideaway for recluse fishermen and yacht owners into one of Mexico's most popular resort destinations. This is due largely to improved roads and air access, plus heavy investment by FONATUR (the government's agency in charge of new resort development) and the private sector.

Los Cabos differs in many respects from its "Mexican Riviera" counterparts. Because of its geographic separation and isolation from mainland Mexico, Los Cabos' visitor industry developed with closer ties to the U.S. (mostly California) than to the rest of Mexico. A "north-of-the-border" atmosphere and attitude give the area an appealing cultural duality. American products fill store shelves, dollars are the preferred currency, U.S.-made cars are everywhere and much of the resort development has been dominated by North American enterprises. Despite these foreign trappings, there's no denying the resort's strong Mexico-by-the-sea atmosphere.

Los Cabos is also unique in its striking desert landscape, dry climate, and "great outdoors" unspoiled beauty. Visitors are surrounded by dramatic coupling of endless cactus desert, backed by cinnamon mountains, and bordered by miles of white sandy beach and clear, azure waters.

Los Cabos is one of Mexico's largest destinations in terms of its layout. Basically there are three areas of concentration. San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas anchor the area's resort strip. The two towns are separated by The Corridor Region, a 29 km heavenly stretch of lovely beaches sprinkled with much of the area's new resort development.

San Jose del Cabo is a pleasant city of meandering streets and lush palm groves with the languid pace of a colonial  village. The area was first visited by Cortes himself in 1535. But it was missionary zeal, not conquistadors., that first brought European civilization to San Jose. A Jesuit mission was built in 1730 to indoctrinate the Percu Indians of the region. In the nineteenth century San Jose slowly evolved into a modest center of commerce for passing ships. Today it is a town of 30,000 people that has a handsome Municipal Palace, charming courtyard restaurants, shops, boutiques, and a lovely tropical estuary. The atmosphere here is subdued compared with the more rowdy town of Cabo San Lucas.

Cabo San Lucas, as the tip of the peninsula and about 30 kms. West of San Jose, is a boom town just beginning to emerge. Dusty streets still prevail, but don't let that fool you. Cabo boasts some fine restaurant, sophisticated shopping, a slick 300-slip marina, and active nightlife. Cabo is tops with fishermen, divers, and those wanting to be close to assorted dining and nightlife. Nearby Medano Beach is a heavenly stretch of calm, crystal clear water, and white sand. Just off shore is El Arco - the area's signature landmark, and one of the world's most awesome natural wonders.

Between these two towns is The Corridor Region, the site of major resort development and some of Baja's most beautiful beaches. This zone is where Los Cabos is staking its claim as Mexico's premier golf destination..

Today the resort attracts a broader range of visitors than ever before, and has gone to great lengths to diversify its offering of activities and attractions. Of course, sportsmen continue to flock to Los Cabos for world-famous fishing, outstanding diving, and game bird hunting. However, the area draws beach lovers, golfers, honeymooners, families, and "eco-tourists".

Outdoor recreation is the resort's main activity, since historic/cultural sightseeing is limited. The area is world renowned for its deep-sea sport fishing, with over 40,000 marlin and sailfish hooked each year. Excellent scuba diving and snorkeling sites are sprinkled throughout the region. Surfing and windsurfing are practiced, along with the latest in water sports gadgetry. Relatively new to the scene is the area's stunning assortment of  championship golf courses. At present there are 108 holes open, with a master plan calling for an eventual 207 holes. Dramatic course layouts by some of golf's premier designers take full advantage of the region's striking landscape.

The area's lodging scene has also improved dramatically. Accommodations are first-class and feature some of Mexico's finest properties. Because of the resort's sprawling layout, selecting the right location is critical to vacation planning.

Cora Baja Resort is a great place in San Jose Del Cabo. Do a search on it in google. Direct rentals from the owners are a great way to vacation.

Despite being one of Mexico's most savvy destinations, Los Cabos has remained relatively unknown outside of its primary west coast markets of California and Pacific Northwest. The introduction of non-stop air service from  several places including Houston via Continental Airlines and Dallas via American Airlines has broadened the area's accessibility, while Alaska Airlines serving the west coast and America West's flights out of Phoenix are bringing in Midwest visitors.
Canadian tourists can fly direct via several airlines.
